77-yr-old burnt to death in Lagos fire
A 77-year-old man, Vincent Agbare, has been reportedly killed in an inferno that gutted his two-storey building apartment at 84, Osho Drive Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, leaving property worth millions destroyed.
An eyewitness told Vanguard that the fire started from a burning candle from Agbare’s living room, before spreading to other parts of the building.
The eyewitness, who identified himself as Shola Akinjobi, added that the septuagenarian was sleeping alone in the apartment, when the fire started Tuesday night, and that he was burnt beyond recognition.
While confirming the report, the Lagos State Fire Service Director, Razaq Fadipe, said men from the state fire service were at the scene to put off the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
TERROR: Army frees three suspected Boko Haram insurgents
The 7 Division of the Nigerian Army has said, that three out of the six suspects Boko Haram insurgents arrested at the Maiduguri International Airport Monday, while returning from this year’s Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia had been released.
Spokesman of the Division, Captain Aliyu Danja told newsmen in Maiduguri yesterday that those released had no link with terrorists, contrary to reports by a section of the media.
Danja confirmed that arrests were made at the airport by security operatives where six suspected Boko Haram sect members were handed over to men of the division, but stressed that after thorough interrogation, it was discovered that they were neither terrorists nor members of Boko Haram Islamic sect. He pointed out that three of them had since been freed by the Division and reunited with their families.
Police disrupt ASUU rally in Akure
POLICE in Ondo State, yesterday, disrupted a rally organised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, to educate the public on their four-month-old industrial action.
Also, the ASUU chapter in Ondo State owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, were not granted permission to hold a rally slated for yesterday.
No fewer than 30 policemen including Mobile officers with an Amoured Personnel Carrier, APC, barricaded the main gate leading to the university, yesterday.
The ASUU members who had planned to move to the streets with their placards were ambushed and stopped from moving to the streets of Akure metropolis.
Pastor accused of raping 9-yr-old, two 7-yr-olds
A pastor, Emmanuel Mathew, 50, appeared before an Abuja High Court for allegedly raping three pupils in a primary school at Mpape, Abuja.
Mathew, who is the pastor and General Overseer of The Choice Bible Church, Mpape, and proprietor of the said school, was arraigned on a five-count charge.
The Prosecutor, DSP Stanley Nwodo, told the court that the accused raped two seven-year-old and a nine-year-old pupils on different occasions in his school.
Nwodo said the offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code, which attracts 14 years imprisonment, an option of fine or both.
Mathew pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On behalf of himself and the G-7 governors, Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, has said that it is not a must for him to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and announced his preparedness and that of G7 governors to dump the party.
This the governor revealed yesterday in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State shortly after a closed door meeting with Governor Sule Lamido.
Nyako said defecting from one party to another has never been a crime, observing that if some people can dump their religion for another, then why can’t politicians dump one party for another party?

Mr Abati said the panel will be chaired by the immediate past Head of Service, Sali Bello and will include the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, and Air Vice Marshal Dik Iruenebere. The panel is to find out why the cars were bought and whether the procurement of the cars followed due process or not. Some people in Nigeria’s second city have been picked up for sporting hair styles inspired by prominent international football players, said Mohammed Yusuf Yola, spokesman for Kano’s sharia police, or Hisbah. Others were thrown in jail and fined for wearing their trousers too low on their waists, mimicking a style that became prominent in the 1990s, partly through the influence of some American hip hop artists. The arrests have followed an order by Kano state Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to cleanse the city of immoral practices and the trend is set to continue in the weeks ahead, said Hisbah Director-General Abba Sufi.The Hisbah is a state police force funded by state govt and is not part of the federal police.“We have arrested 150 men and women in the past week, including prostitutes and their boyfriends, transvestites, alcoholics and those engaged in indecent dressing in contravention of the sharia legal code,” Yola told AFP.

Ex-reps member Dino Melaye arrested for protesting against Oduah
Dino led a group of protesters to the Federal Secretariat, Abuja around noon today, calling for the sack of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW armoured cars.
Drama ensued during the protest as another group emerged from nowhere to stage a counter protest to drum up support for the minister.
The police led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Sunday Olukoya, arrived at the scene and promptly arrested Dino Melaye's group. They were taken away in a Toyota Hilux van, marked NPS 21280 at about one this afternoon.

Thisday foreign editor Paul Ohia found dead in his car in Apapa
Thisday Foreign and Diplomatic Editor, Mr. Paul Ohia, was found dead yesterday October 22nd in his official car, a white Kia Optima along Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos.
According to eyewitness reports, the deceased had parked his car for several hours by the side of the road, which aroused the suspicion of passersby, prompting them to move closer to check on him. The eyewitnesses said the deceased had reclined the driver's seat and lay on it as if he was sleeping; until they opened the car doors to find out that he was motionless and lifeless.
The sympathizers who noticed the Thisday sticker on the windshield of the car called Thisday office, informing them of the tragic incident. Thisday staff and the police moved Mr. Ohia to Lagoon Hospital in Apapa where he was confirmed dead.

Presidential fleet larger than three domestic airlines - report
The declining fortunes of the domestic airlines have made President Goodluck Jonathan’s 10-aircraft Presidential Air Fleet larger than the fleets of three domestic airlines combined, investigations by Punch correspondent revealed on Tuesday.
The three carriers are Chanchangi, MedView, and FirstNation airlines. Chanchangi has one aircraft; Medview Airlines, three; while FirstNation has two.
IRS Airlines, with five aircraft in its fleet, has only one that is currently operational. The four others have been sent overseas for routine maintenance for a long time now.
It can be technically assumed that the Presidential Air Fleet is bigger than the four domestic airlines, according to industry experts.
