Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to run for president. But in order for him to do that, the Constitution must be amended, to allow for naturalized U.S. citizens, rather than just the native-born variety, to serve as president. Schwarzenegger is proposing just this change.
I live in the state of California and did not support the 2003 recall that brought Schwarzenegger to power, kicking out Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, who had been reelected less than a year earlier. Nor did I vote for or like Arnold as our Governator.
But I do agree with him on the issue of whether he should be eligible to serve as president of the United States. America is a melting pot. Some of our finest Americans came here by choice, not by birth. It is a reality, and an evolution that we as a nation must face. And I therefore agree we must change the 12th Amendment to the Constitution to allow for natural-born citizens to serve in the White House (Arnold became a U.S. citizen in 1983).
As more and more immigrants have and will continue to come here, should the right or honor of running for president only belong to those who are natural born citizens? And, what does that mean exactly?
As the parent of an adopted child and a biological child, I want my adopted son to have the same opportunities as his American-born sister. He's American, my husband and I are American. And we must not cut off anyone's dream to strive for greatness...including dreaming about one day becoming America's commander-in-chief.
